South: Sam Roi Yot and the cave temple
Start early for the climb to Phraya Nakhon Cave in Sam Roi Yot National Park, where a pavilion stands in a cave lit by sunlight from above. The walk takes about an hour each way and is easiest before the heat of the day. On the way back, stop in Pranburi for lunch by the sea and finish with sunset at Khao Takiab.
North: Phetchaburi palaces and temples
Khao Wang is a hilltop palace above Phetchaburi town, with a cable car up the hill. Add the cave temples around the town and Phetchaburi's famous desserts, then stop at the seaside Mrigadayavan Palace on the drive back towards Hua Hin.
Family day: Cha-am parks
For children, combine Santorini Park and the Swiss Sheep Farm in the Cha-am area, or spend a day at the Vana Nava water park. The car waits while you play, so there is no hunting for a ride home with tired children.
Nature: Pala-U waterfall and Kaeng Krachan
Pala-U Waterfall sits in the forest west of Hua Hin, part of the Kaeng Krachan park area. Bring walking shoes and swimwear. On the way back, Wat Huay Mongkol with its giant statue of Luang Phor Thuad is an easy stop.

- The cooler months, November to February, are the most comfortable for walking.
