Phayao is a small, peaceful northern town centred on Kwan Phayao, a large freshwater lake famous for glowing sunsets. On its shores stands Wat Si Khom Kham with Phra Chao Ton Luang, a huge and deeply revered Buddha image, while the ruins of Wat Tiloke Aram sit in the lake itself. It makes a relaxing stop on the way to Chiang Rai.
