What makes Hua Hin special
Hua Hin has been the Thai royal family's seaside retreat since the 1920s, and that gives it a calm, orderly character unlike other resorts. Highlights include the hilltop temples and viewpoints, the wooden railway station, the huge seated Buddha of Wat Huay Mongkol and the giant statues of seven Thai kings at Rajabhakti Park.
Day trips that seal the deal
- Phraya Nakhon Cave in Sam Roi Yot – a royal pavilion lit by a sunbeam through the cave roof.
- Sam Roi Yot National Park – limestone hills, lotus marsh and quiet beaches.
- Hua Hin Hills Vineyard – Thai wine with a valley view.
- Kui Buri National Park – wild elephants on an afternoon safari.
How long to stay
Two nights covers the town, the beach and a market. Three to five lets you add Sam Roi Yot and a winery or water park. A week or more works well for golfers and anyone working remotely; many Europeans spend the whole winter here.
Who will love it (and who won't)
Families, couples, golfers, food lovers and older travellers tend to love Hua Hin. Backpackers looking for full-moon parties or divers chasing coral will be happier on the islands – see Hua Hin to the islands for onward routes.
