About the Gulf ferry
The service launched in 2017 as a fast way to link two of Thailand's best-known beach towns. Since then it has been paused and relaunched more than once, with schedules varying by season and sea conditions; in the monsoon months crossings are most likely to be cancelled. In Hua Hin it uses the pier at Khao Takiab, on the south side of town. If it is running when you travel, it's a fun ride for light packers.
By car
The road route goes up the east coast, around Bangkok on the Motorway and outer ring road, then down Rama II and Phetkasem Road. There's no ferry timetable, no pier transfers and no risk of a cancelled crossing; families, groups and anyone with big bags usually find it simpler. With a van, a group of up to ten pays one fixed price.
Other combinations
- Flying into U-Tapao Airport near Pattaya? A car straight to Hua Hin avoids Bangkok's city centre.
- Heading for the east-coast islands? From Hua Hin we also drive to Ban Phe pier for Koh Samet.
- Splitting the trip: stop for lunch in Bangkok or at the Rama II seafood restaurants near Samut Sakhon.
